Wanaka Session 13: Old Fashioned Story Telling Wednesday July 3
7:30pm (doors open at 7:00pm)
Rebecca recently finished cycling from Switzerland (Lake Geneva) to New Zealand (Lake Hawea), a journey of more than 20,000km covering 19 countries over the course of a year. Along with having an epic adventure, the aims of the journey were to connect with as many school children and Olympic athletes as possible along the way and to raise money for a New Zealand-based charity that aims to get high school-aged girls into sport.
Having represented NZ at both the Olympic Games (2008) and Commonwealth Games (2006 and 2010) in the heptathlon, Rebecca retired in 2012 and then went on to work for the NZ Olympic Committee and more recently the International Olympic Committee (IOC), based in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was there that she met two other Kiwis and the idea of cycling home was born.
Rebecca has come home, the long way, with an abundance of good stories. She rode through the heat in Uzbekistan and the snow in China, pedaling a 47kg bike. Then there was the crash followed by stitches in Iran, a Police escort in Turkey, and friends subbing in and out along the way. We absolutely cannot wait to hear more! Rebecca will be joining us at the festival to speak about this whopper journey. She will tell this modern tale in an old fashioned format; we look forward to hearing all about it!
